CiprofloxacinNexium and other heartburn medications may be the only options for people who may not have the stomach or have had it in the past.
In some cases, Nexium and other heartburn medications may also be the only treatment options for people who have heartburn that lasts more than four hours, doctors say.
People who are allergic to esomeprazole, the active ingredient in Nexium and other heartburn medications, or to other stomach acid-lowering drugs, such as Pepcid, Tagamet and famotidine, may have difficulty swallowing food. They also may have an increased sensitivity to the stomach acid.
The Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the safety and effectiveness of medications, warns that people with heartburn, known as reflux, may have heartburn that lasts longer than four hours.
The FDA said it has considered a number of potential risks and adverse effects for people who take Nexium and other heartburn medications.
The FDA also has considered the following factors in its review of Nexium and other heartburn medications.
How long before heartburn can occur?
People with heartburn that lasts longer than four hours have a higher risk of heartburn.
People who take Nexium and other heartburn medications, such as Pepcid, Tagamet and famotidine, may have a greater likelihood of developing heartburn that lasts longer than four hours.
Some doctors have said people with reflux may need to see a doctor if they have had heartburn in the past, especially if they have stomach ulcers or other underlying health conditions that may be causing heartburn.
However, the FDA has not found a link between heartburn and Nexium and other heartburn medications.
“The risk of heartburn in people taking Nexium is small,” said Dr. David Karp, a gastroenterologist at the University of Pennsylvania.
People should not take Nexium or other heartburn medications that contain the inactive ingredient in Nexium.
